Prelude I Blog

Greetings, Prep 1 Families,

Thank you for another lovely week of rehearsing in Prep 1 Chorus! The children are really starting to sing out and show a lot of confidence in their music-making and contributions to our class activities. We are in the midst of our Halloween Unit, while covering some important concepts along the way!

Rehearsal Recap:

  • We kicked off class with a fun song featuring body percussion and nonsense words, Waddaly Atcha. The children had a lot of fun creating new vocal sounds to make on the final beat!
  • The children learned a fun new welcome song and partner dance in Spanish, Buenos Dias (lyrics below). Several of the children knew the song and how to translate it, which was great! The motions to the partner dance are challenging, but great for building hand-eye coordination, gross motor skills, and for making new friends. See how much of the dance your child can remember at home this week!

Buenos días, buenos días

¿Cómo estás?, ¿Cómo estás?

Yo muy bien gracias, yo muy bien gracias.

¿Y usted? ¿Y usted?

  • The children had fun making spooky ghost sounds with our Halloween Vocal Explorations.
  • The children practiced beautiful solo singing on sol-mi-la by singing What Will You Be for Halloween? in Call and Response with the rest of the class. They got to roll a ball to pick a friend to be the next soloist when their turn had ended.
  • The children worked on maintaining the steady beat and experimenting with different voices and vocal registers, while chanting the highly rhythmic rhyme The Witch Has an Itch. We passed our witch puppet and each singer got a turn choosing a new body part where the witch would have an itch! So fun!

  • The children improvised new motions while singing the spooky song in a minor key, We Are Scary Skeletons. They loved saying a big “BOO!” at the end!
  • The children had fun passing the pumpkin to the steady beat while singing Pumpkin, Pumpkin. Each time the song ended, a singer got to play a percussion instrument to the steady beat while singing the song. We had quite a grooving band by the end!
  • The children then learned about three important notes on the staff, sol, mi, and la, and they each got their own staff to compose on, with the use of pumpkin notes! The children took turns sharing their compositions and loved hearing what they sounded like!

  • We ended with another movement activity, to Gounod’s Dance of the Marionettes, allowing the children to switch between acting out various Halloween characters based upon which scarf I held up.

In addition to going over the activities mentioned above, please continue to have your child listen to I’m Thankful, and this Mp3 of Sleigh Song:
