Prelude I Blog

Prep 1 –  Tuesday, Jazmine

We had another wonderful week in class together!  We started off by learning a new welcome song “Buenos Dias” and its accompanying partner dance.  Then we reinforced independent singing (on “sol” and “mi”) with “Hickety Tickety Bumble Bee”.  After some scarf sound warm ups, and “I love to sing and play” for our warm ups, we were ready to dive into our lesson!

We began by playing “Bee Bee Bumble Bee”.  After getting it back in our minds, ears, and voices, we were able to transcribe the melody using our bee symbols on the staff (pictured below).  Next, we transitioned to the Glockenspiels and were able to play (both as a group and as a soloist) “Bee Bee Bumble Bee” using the “sol”, “la”, and “mi” pitches in F on the instruments.  These are not easy task for new singers, but they did a wonderful job deciphering if the pitches were the same, higher, or lower, than the one before.  I was very proud!

Then we took a dance break with “Looby Loo” and played some “Here Comes the Bluebird”.

Next we read a ‘book’ and introduced the song “Gonna Build Me A Mountain”.  This will be a song that we will keep practicing every week for their recital in May, so keep singing it at home!  We were even able to learn the first verse of “Blue Skies”, another song that we’ll be singing for the recital in May, so this week was full of wonderful musical discovery.

Thank you all for a wonderful week and I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday!

Prep 1 –  Thursday, Emily

This week we started off class with the song “My Little Boat” which was a wonderful way for me (Jazmine) to make sure I still knew everyone’s name!  Then we dove right into some fun warm ups using the scarfs to create siren sounds so we could use the full range of our voices.

To practice our beat keeping and rhythm playing abilities, we had fun taking our “train” around the room to “Engine Engine No. 9”.  Sometimes our train went fast, and sometimes it went slowly.  We were able to transcribe the rhythm to the chant by figuring out if each beat had one syllable (“ta”) or two (“ti-ti”).

After that we dove into the world of pitch and learned the song “Cobbler Cobbler”.  We were able to figure out which pitches the song used by determining if each pitch was the same, higher, or lower than the one before it.

Then we played a wonderful round of “Here Comes The Bluebird”, and we ended with the new song (and accompanying partner dance) “Bow Wow Wow”.  I so appreciated getting to spend time with such wonderful young singers, and Ms. Emily looks forward to being back with you next Thursday!
