Greetings, Prep 1 Families!

Thank you for another lovely week of singing and music fun in Prep 1! We are continuing to welcome Spring with songs about insects, animals, trains, raindrops, starlight, and cobblers, while learning some fundamental music concepts. Enjoy reading about our musical adventures below, and please continue using this blog as a resource for music practice and growth and home!

From Jazmine (Tuesday Prep 1):

This week we sang “On A Log” and practiced reading our rhythms for each animal – the frog (Glub), the the snake (sss), the chicken (cluck), the bee (zzz), and the flea (ch).  We also sang the song about Peter Rabbitt and the fly who lived on his ear, having fun taking away a work or motion every time we sang the song.  We reviewed 5 little ducks and our animal rhythm compositions, working with Tas, Ti-tis, and Shs.  This week we also review the song “If All The Raindrops” and learned two new verses:”If all the snowflakes were candy bars and milkshakes” and “If all the sun beams were bubble gum and ice cream”. Lastly we had fun with “Elephants Have Wrinkles” finding new body parts for our elephants to have wrinkles on.  It was a great class and I’m very much looking forward to next week!

From Emily (Wednesday Prep 1):

This week we worked on 2 important concepts:  Following the conductor and the notes So and Mi.  We started our class with a little bit of part singing in I am the Train that Stops for You, with me singing “toot toot toot” and the kids adding the other part of the song.  Then we all took turns leading our hissing snakes while other followed, and then we explored our voices by following shapes on the board.
We worked on keeping a steady beat in our feet while we chanted:
Engine, Engine number 9,
Going Down Chicago Line.
See it sparkle. See it shine.
Engine Engine Number 9.
Learning to step to a beat is an essential skill that helps children embody the music they are hearing. Encourage your child to march to faster and slower beats while saying this fun chant.
We also kept the beat in different ways in the song Cobbler, Cobbler, Mend My Shoe. We worked on Beat and Rhythm 2,4,6,8.
We had fun learning the first verse of a song in Spanish about a cobbler:  Niñas Hermosas.  
We practiced following a conductor, as I led the children in knowing when to sing louder and softer, faster and slower, and when to stop.
The big challenge for the day was learning Sol and Mi and their hand signs.  We sang the song Who has. . ., a call and response song using only the notes Sol and Mi.  The children used body signs to show the higher and lower pitches, and then I told them that the higher note was called Sol and the lower note was called Mi.  We also learned and practiced the hand signs.  Have your children practice these hand signs at home if you can.
We sang My Paddle’s Keen and Bright again this week.  We will be singing this often, as I would  like the children to know it quite well so we can start using it as a canon.  Last week’s blog had a recording to help them learn it.
We ended our class by learning the first verse of Woody Guthrie’s wonderful song Mail Myself to You.  Here is a recording on you tube:

From Katie (Thursday Prep 1):

  • We learned a new song for Spring, “Little Peter Rabbit!” We acted out the song with different motions while maintaining the beat of the song. Next week, we will sing and ‘hide” different parts of the song in order to work on our “inner listening,” and understanding musical pauses or rests.
  • We practiced pitch matching and intonation with the song Hickety Tickety Bumble Bee – I am so impressed with their confidence to sing solos, and their intonation is developing nicely!
  • We revisited the song “Fleas,” which is such a great tool to practice singing the entire major scale, both ascending and descending, as the flea crawls up and down our body! It also helps distinguish loud and soft singing – have your child teach it to you this week!
  • We revisited the fun song “On a Log,” and the children did a great job chanting the different animal sounds, which featured “tahs,” “titis” and rests!”
  • With our new train theme, we hopped aboard engine number 9 with the chant “Engine, Engine, No. 9,” and chugged our train around the room to several different speeds or musical “tempos.” Have fun chanting these words with your child at home, and experimenting with different speeds:

  • We sang a new song, “This Train,” which is based upon an Africa-American spiritual. Our version took us to all sorts of exciting places, and allowed the children to move freely about the room to the beat, while singing the response “Chugga Chugga Chugga Choo!”
  • We got out the rhythm sticks and played the rhythm of several different animal names with our Animal Rhythm Picture Cards. Extend this exercise at home by naming objects throughout the house, identifying the number of syllables, and then the rhythm, for example: “Hat” is “Tah” “Apple” is “Titi.” Clap and chant together!
  • We reviewed “If All of the Raindrops,” one of our lovely recital songs. The kids are sounding great and enjoyed making up motions for this one.
  • We ended with the special song and game, “Starlight, Starbright,” which will help us discover where Sol and Mi live on the staff!
