Allegro Blog: Week of September 23, 2019

Hello Allegro Singers & Families,

I hope everyone is staying cool in this heat wave! We had a very productive rehearsal on Tuesday, despite the heat! We started off our time together with a really fun folk line dance and song, “Alabama Gal.”

The past two weeks we have been working on gaining more fluency with our solfege syllables (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do) and with reading a C Major scale on the staff. Homework for the last two weeks has been on this topic with students using both solfege syllables and note letter names on their homework. Please be sure that you help your child complete their practice log each week and if you ever have any questions regarding the homework or what to practice, please reach out!

We warmed up our voices by singing some chord patterns on solfege syllables and working on the canon Seashell. The text of Seashell is: Seashell, seashell sing a song for me. Sing about the ocean, sing about the sea. Ask your child to sing it for you this week! We also started to learn a new canon, Hava Nashira (which is also in the key of C Major!). We will continue to work on both of these canons and learn several more this semester. Canons are a great way for singers to gain confidence in their part holding skills and are a staple in our Allegro curriculum.

We then worked on four of our performance pieces: “Haida,” “Light a Candle for Peace,” “Something Told the Wild Geese,” and “Hot Chocolate.”  For next weeks, students need to have the melody of “Haida” memorized as well as the two melodies in “Light a Candle for Peace.” The next song up for memorization will be “Hot Chocolate” as we are going to start learning some choreography in the next few weeks!

A few notes for next week: 1) Please be sure your child brings his/her folder to rehearsal EACH WEEK. Without their music, singers have a harder time fully participating! 2) Next week we will have gently used Allegro uniform pieces available for purchase. I will not know until the beginning of our class what sizes we have available. If you are interested in getting a used shirt or skirt for you child, please plan to bring cash or a check (shirts are $10 and skirts are $15). 3) LOST AND FOUND: we had a jean jacket, a floral sweatshirt, a green baseball hat, and a space backpack with several “I Survived Books” left in the room after rehearsal. If your child is missing any of these items, we will have them available for claiming on Tuesday!

Have a wonderful week 🙂
