On Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4, the Cantabile
Youth Singers will present Americana, a tribute
and celebration of popular music of our land. The June 3
program features the Preparatory and Intermediate choirs
with traditional folk songs, spirituals and selections from “Snoopy” and “The
Artistocats”. Piano, violin and percussion will accompany
Cantabile’s junior choirs. The June 4 program, featuring
Cantabile’s senior choirs, Concert and Chamber, will
pay tribute to folk music, spirituals and gospel, English
light opera, jazz and Broadway/cinema. Musical selections
include Amazing Grace with oboe, Deep River with cellist
Stephen Harrison, a rousing HMS Pinafore medley with exciting
costumes and staging, music of jazz and swing greats Irvine
Berlin, George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael and Fats Waller,
featuring choreography by Angie Higgins and a jazz combo
and, some of the best loved Broadway favorites such as Somewhere
Over the Rainbow and a medley of “West Side Story”,
featuring tenor soloist, Kevin Gibbs.
In addition to guest artists from the community, Americana also features the solo talents of singers from within the choir.
Conductors for the weekend will be Keri Lindell, Shane Troll
and, guest conductor, Karen Robinson, local composer and music
educator.
Cantabile Youth Singers is under the artistic direction of
Elena Sharkova, Director of Choral Activities at San Jose State
University and Artistic Director of the Chorale Symphony Silicon
Valley.
Cantabile Youth Singers is part of the Cantabile Choral Guild
and the Foothill College Performing Arts Alliance and welcomes
dedicated singers ages 6-18 in a year-long music educational
and performance opportunities. Cantabile Youth Singers perform
on a regular basis with local Bay Area music organizations,
including Opera San Jose and Symphony Silicon Valley and just
made their debut in Carnegie Hall in summer 2005.
