Week of September 21, 2015/Class #2

Greetings, Prep 1 Families!

Thank you for another great week of rehearsals! We started off singing  a special greeting song ‘Buenos Dias”:

Buenos días, buenos días – right hand wave/left hand wave

¿Cómo estás?, ¿Cómo estás? – right hand shake/left hand shake

Yo muy bien gracias, yo muy bien gracias – take hands, half turn

¿Y usted? ¿Y usted? – clap-clap-pat, clap-clap-pat

Please sing and say these words with your child this week – they will remember it! Simplify the movements by choosing different ways to keep the steady beat – patting your head, your shoulders, marching, hopping!

We also played the African-American circle game “Just From the Kitchen” where the kids took turns picking new foods and “flying” to a new spot in the circle. Think of new foods to share next week!

For our Vocal Warm-ups, we explored high and low, and the solfege syllables sol and mi, mi-re-do, sol-mi-do, and sol-la-sol, singing with our Harold the Horse, Scarves, and creating our own Vocal Elevators. At home, you can practice making high and low sounds by moving an imaginary elevator up and down with both hands together – don’t forget to stop in various floors to let the people off!

For our music theory activity, we learned the song Bell Horses and took turns keeping the steady beat at the board. We also played a super fun game, with one child acting out the “horse” part and one child bring the “rider.” Please sing the song with your child.

We continued working on the lovely song, “Sing a Rainbow,” using our brightly colored scarves! Please share the lyrics below with your child, and see how much they remember. Find something at home that they can use to represent one or more of the colors!

We also started the classic song from “The Sound of Music” Do Re Mi – listen to this song with your child make up movements for each new phrase!

We concluded with the quiet and moving lullaby “All the Pretty Little Horses.” Please listen to the lovely recording, and have your child share some favorite “quiet songs” which we can all sing together in the coming weeks.

Thank you again for a lovely week of rehearsals!

Warmly,

Katie and Jazmine

I Can Sing A Rainbow

Red and yellow and pink and green,

Purple and orange and blue.

I can sing a rainbow,

Sing a rainbow,

You can sing one too!

Listen with your eyes,

Listen with your eyes,

And sing everything you see.

You can sing a rainbow,

Sing a rainbow,

Sing a long with me.

Red and yellow and pink and green,

Purple and orange and blue.

You can sing a rainbow,

Sing a rainbow,

Now you’ve sung one too!
