Week of October 30/ Class # 8

Greetings Prep 2 Families,

Many thanks from Jazmine and myself for another great week of rehearsing in Prep 2 Chorus, which involved some pretty spooky singing!

Rehearsal Overview

This week we opened our rehearsal with two of our favorite welcoming activities, How D-ya Dootee, and I Let Her Go-Go. The singers then displayed how much their voices have developed this semester by improvising their own “ghost sounds” with the help of colorful scarves – all the singers are doing a great job developing unity between their lower, middle, and upper vocal registers.  They are also expanding their vocal range with our favorite warm-up, Bumble Bee

Jazmine and I have also added more solo singing to our warm-ups, which gives each child the opportunity to match pitch alone as a soloist, and also gives the teachers the opportunity to assess their progress – we were so happy with what we heard! Please encourage your child’s solo singing and pitch matching at home by playing parts of the recordings below, stopping it, and having them echo!

The children have also been doing a number of impressive music theory activities, including maintaining an ostinato on the glockenspiels whilst singing “Simple Gifts,” sight-reading, improvising, and composing their own Halloween rhythms, and sight-reading short solfege patterns. We will continue to pursue these theory activities in the coming weeks, with our staff whiteboards, rhythm cards, and special theory sheets!

This week, continue to watch and listen to:

And stay tuned for two new special songs next week:

And continue studying these songs:

Please work on the following:

  • Continue memorizing all the lyrics of Path to the Moon, practice singing it as you sway with the waves!
  • Review our circle movements for Haida, including the big CLAP on the rest! Remember to sing both A and B sections!
  • Practice all three sections of Shake the Papaya Down, especially the C section!

I love papaya, yes I do

Juicy papaya, yes I do

If you will help me, I’ll help you

Shake the papaya down

Have a great Halloween weekend, and we look forward to seeing you next week!

Katie and Jazmine
