Week of November 13th/ Class # 10

Greetings Prep 2 Families,

Many thanks from Jazmine and myself for another great week of rehearsing in Prep 2 Chorus! Our December recital is getting closer, and you are all doing a lovely job preparing for it.

Trivia Question: In honor of our fun new dance from Antarctica, The Penguin Dance, how many species of penguins are there in the world?

Please note: All Prep 1 and 2 classes are cancelled on Tuesday December 1st, in lieu of our holiday concert dress rehearsal for the Upper Choirs. There will be a catch up rehearsal on Tuesday December 15th!

Rehearsal Overview

This week we opened our rehearsal in a circle, revisiting two of our favorite songs and dances, Welcome Here and Bluebird – a wonderful segue into our favorite warm-up, Bumble Bee! The singers then stayed in circle formation to rehearse their special canons, Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree, and Now All the Woods Are the Waking. Both these songs are excellent opportunities to sing in 2-part harmony, and the children are doing a great job building this skill! Have your child teach you one of these songs and see if you can sing it in canon together!

We are also continuing to feature solo singing to our warm-ups, which allows each child the opportunity to match pitch alone as a soloist.  Please encourage your child’s solo singing and pitch matching at home by playing parts of the recordings below, stopping it, and having them echo! Or, just ask them to share a favorite song from chorus!

This week, we also chanted and played the rhythm of the words in the song “Everybody Say Peace,” and also the rhythm of different holiday words. Next week, the children will split into groups and arrange their own rhythmic compositions to share with the class on different instruments!

Next week, we will also gear up for the holidays by singing a special arrangement of Jingle Bells which takes us all over the world, and learning a fun partner dance to the tune of Jingle Bells! Get ready for some jingling fun!

This week, continue to watch and listen to:

Please also listen to Over the River and Through the Woods, which will be a fun sing-along song for the end of our recital!

In addition:

  • Continue memorizing all the lyrics of Path to the Moon, practice singing it as you sway with the waves!
  • Continue our circle movements for Haida, including the big CLAP on the rest! Remember to sing both A and B sections!

Trivia Answer: There are 17 species of Penguins in the world!

Have a great weekend, and we look forward to seeing you next week!

Katie and Jazmine
