Greetings, Prep 2 Families!

Thank you for another fun and enriching week of music-making in Prep 2. Please read the important information below about upcoming events, and the recaps of what your child is doing in Prep 2 Class!

Concert Season is Coming!

We are preparing for two wonderful performances – Prep 2 will be featured in Cantabile’s All-Choir Spring Concert on Saturday May 14th at 1pm (call time 11:30), with our dress rehearsal taking place on Thursday May 12th at  First United Methodist Church, Palo Alto, 4:15-6:30 PM.

Prep 2 will also perform in recitals the following week (please note class-time adjustments):

Monday Prep 2 Class Recital: Monday, May 16 – 4.00-4:45 pm

Tuesday Prep 2 Class Recital: Tuesday, May 17th – 4.30-5.15 pm

Thursday Prep 2 (early) Class Recital: Thursday, May 19th – 4:30-5:15 pm

Thursday Prep 2 (late) Class Recital: Thursday, May 19th – 5:30-6:15 pm

Uniforms

New Cantabile singers will need uniforms for our spring recitals and concert – please order as soon as possible at Merry Mart Uniforms, as they tend to sell out of the Prep skirts fairly quickly. Singers will need to be in full Cantabile uniform at the May Spring Concert and Prep 2 Recitals. Please note that Prep 2 singers need to be wearing the red polo shirts with the Cantabile logo, and uniform black pants for boys, and skirts for girls.

From Katie and Jazmine:

  • We welcomed one another with How Do You Dootee, and discovered that we use our speaking voices to chant the rhyme. We then practiced switching between speaking and singing by singing “Good afternoon” on sol-mi-la pitches to our new neighbors.
  • We also sang and danced to the fun partner game, Me and You.
  • We danced a new dance – Great Big House in New Orleans – the kids had a great time learning these new moves and picking new pies and cities. This song is also based upon the pentatonic scale, which the children have been studying in their homework. Next week, we will derive the rhythm and pitches of Great Big House and write it on the staff in F major.
  • The children took turns leading different warm-ups, including Tuning Tree, and Mama Made Me Mash My M and M’s.
  • We then worked with the solfege ladder in D, and identified our newest canon, Where Is John? We reviewed the song and sang it in 2-part harmony!
  • We sang two of our recital songs, Kokoleoko and A Great Big Sea – the children should be continuing to review and memorize these songs at home!
  • We played a fun new African stone passing game from Ghana, called Obwisana. The children had a great time selecting a rock, naming it, and passing the rocks to the steady beat! Next week, we will use sticks and vary the game to be more challenging.
  • We clapped and sang the song Apple Tree in tahs and titis, then on solfege syllables. The children then worked out the notes in C-doh and wrote the song on the staff!

From Emily:
We learned 2 new dances today, composed songs on the tone ladder, and then the kids showed me how much they knew of their concert songs.

We started our class today singing the call and response song Telephone, and I got to hear each child sing on their own.  Every week the singing gets clearer!  Then we worked on Kokoleoko, which we will be singing in our concert.  In addition to learning a new section, the children learned where the clapping comes—but we did it with tambourines today to make it a little more fun.   In keeping with the Rooster theme, we learned Let’s Put the Rooster in the Stew.   This song will help us learn a new rhythm next week, and is also a fun canon.

We got to learn the new dance Jump Jim Joe, which involved jumping, sliding and swinging your partner.

The children read a passage of music from the board, and then found those same 2 bars in the concert song Manx Lullaby.  We sang the song several times, and I heard the children sing it in duets.

We used the song Bounce High, Bounce Low to learn about 2-meter, bar lines and strong beats., and then we saw that our concert song Great Big Sea  is also in 2 meter.  The children then identified rhythms they knew within measures in the song.  We learned a new verse, so we have learned nearly the whole song.

We finished up our class with one more new dance: Tideo.  I really love this little song and folk dance, so I was especially glad to share it with them.  They quickly figured out how the dance worked, in spite of having only 4 children in the class today.  I was very impressed.

I want to give you all a gentle reminder to bring your children to class on time as much as possible.  Believe me, as a mom myself, I know it can be hard sometimes, but it really helps me with planning when I know that I can start on time.  Thank you in advance for your help.
