Prep 2 Blog #8 Week of April 3, 2017

ALL SINGERS – VERY IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ:

Recitals are coming!
  • Tuesday’s recital is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9th at 4:30 pm the Parish Hall.
  • Thursday’s recital is scheduled for Thursday, May 11th at 5:00 pm the Parish Hall.
  • We will be hosting a potluck following the Recital, and we will send out sign-up sheets next week.  Singers will need to be in full concert dress for their recital.  (You can read more about full concert dress here.)

Mandatory Dress Rehearsal

  • All Prep 2 singers will have a mandatory Dress Rehearsal on Thursday, May 4th at 4:30 pm at First United Methodist Church of Palo Alto (625 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto).
  • Release times will be sent out next week.
  • Again, please make sure all singers are in full concert dress at the Dress Rehearsal.
All Choir Concert, We Are A Circle
  • The All Choir Concert, We Are A Circle will take place on Saturday, May 6th at 1pm at First United Methodist Church of Palo Alto (625 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto).
  • Singers are called at 11:30 am that morning in full concert dress.
  • Make sure you buy your tickets!

Prep 2 Tuesday, Amy

Prep 2 singers had a substitute teacher this week, Ms. Kyle, because Amy was out of town. Kyle reported that the singers enjoyed reviewing the song “Lucy Locket” and playing the solo singing game! After singing and playing the game, the singers worked to figure out the rhythm of the song and how to sing the melody on solfege syllables! Great job, Prep 2!

Prep 2 worked on several of our choral pieces: “We Can Plant a Forest,” “I Am,” “Fairest Lady,” and “There Has to be a Song.” We are working towards memorization on ALL of these pieces. “I Am” should be memorized for next week. Singers have copies of the music, a lyrics sheet, and a link to a youtube recording (posted on the blog two weeks ago). Please use these great resources to help with memorization.
Rehearsal ended with a few more singing games: Rocky Mountain, Sally Go Round the Sun, and Double Double Ice Ice.  I look forward to seeing everyone next week!

Prep 2 Thursday, Emily

Dear Parents,

We are really gearing up for the all-choir concert, which will take place May 6 in Palo Alto.  If your child does not yet have a uniform, please make sure you get one soon.  They often run out, and you don’t want to be stuck at the last minute.

In addition, please make sure that you are having your child listen to the concert songs several times during the week.  They should now have music or word sheets to for all four songs.  All of the concert song names below are links so you can easily access the recording.  Please have them look at the music while they are listening to re-inforce their learning.   If your child does not have music for each song, let me know and I will make sure they have it next week.  Students should now bring their folders every week, as we will be using the sheet music in every class.

We started class this week with the game I let he go-go, from Trinidad and Tobago.  The children stood in a line with hands at their sides for their warm-ups.  I am having the children sing their warms ups in different moods and voice types so they can develop flexibility in how they use their voices.  In addition, it helps them learn to express emotions through singing.

We reviewed the beginning of We Can Plant a Forest, and we learned the next set of words.  We then watched a video of There Has to be a Song, and the children sang along while looking at their scores.

After all that focus, we needed to get up and dance, so we sang and danced one of my favorites:  Cedar Swamp. Judging by the amount of smiling, skipping and begging to do it again, I think they like it, too! ; )  We then derived the rhythm of the song, which contains the 3 main rhythms that we have been working on this semester. :  Tiri tiri, ti-tiri and Tiri-ti.

We then moved to the beat and chanted Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat.  The children then identified that each beat had 3 equal parts.  We learned that that rhythm is a ti-ti-ti, that it is part of 6/8 time, and that the main beat in 6/8 time is the dotted quarter note, which we call Tam. We then played the game Santa Maloney, which is also in 6/8 time, so the children could continue to get a sense of compound meters.

I then handed out the music for I am, another one of our concert songs,  which is in 6/8 time, so they could see some sheet music in that meter. They were pretty tired at that point, so we put the music away and sang some French songs: Jean Petit and Chocolate Chaud.
