Prep 2 Blog #6 Week of March 20, 2017

Prep 2 –  Tuesday, Amy

We had a fun and productive rehearsal this week! We learned a new song and dance “Bow, Wow, Wow.” After dancing for a bit, we figured out the rhythm of the song and sang it on rhythm syllables. Next week, we’ll work on putting the notes and rhythm on the staff.
We reviewed our performance pieces – “Fairest Lady,” “We Can Plant a Forest,” and “I Am.”  We are working towards memorization of “Fairest Lady” and “I Am” in the next few weeks.  To help your singer memorize these pieces, please share these videos:
*Please note that we are singing Fairest Lady in unison, but this video has a few sections in two-parts.
Finally, we ended our song with a solo singing game, “No One’s in the House but Dinah.” The singers enjoyed guessing who the “mystery soloist” was each time we played the game.

Prep 2 –  Thursday, Emily

Dear Parents,

Your children are growing musically by leaps and bounds!  I hear more singing, I notice more comprehension of musical concepts, and I notice their mastery of the songs we have been working on.

We have been focused on our musicianship as well as our French songs up to this point, and they are doing great with them.  They are starting to master the Hot Chocolate round, and they really know J’entends le Moulin.  While we will continue to work on those things, we will be turning some of our attention to the songs we will be singing in the all-choir concert in May.  There are 4 songs they will need to know for the concert.  I will be teaching them in class, and I will be providing links to the songs.  Please have your children listen to them often.  The more confident your child feels about the songs, the more fun they will have at the concert.  I want this to be a positive experience for them so they feel encouraged to do it again!

We started with the song I let her Go-go from Trinidad and Tobago, and then warmed up our voices.  I am having them experiment with different ways to express themselves vocally with the exercise Mama made me mash my M and M’s.

We danced Chicken on the Fence Post, and then derived the melody with solfege and Hand signs.  We put the notes on the tone ladder and sang them all in sequence up and down.  Then I used the tone ladder to show them the beginning of the next song, which was new to them.

They learned a new French Canadian game, The Swallow, and listened for and identified our new rhythm from last week:  Ti-Tiri.  We then identified several rhythms in this song.  We will be using this song in the future to learn about changing time signatures.

The children read a mystery song on the board, which turned out to be Alouette, and then we sang it as a transition to singing our French songs:  Vent Frats, Chocolat Chaud and J’entends le moulin.  The children went home with a worksheet that asks them to fill in the missing notes of Alouette. Please have them bring it back next week so we can see how they are doing with these skills.  Thanks!
