March 14, 2016/Rehearsal #9

Dear Vocalise Singers,

We have three weeks of intense Latin American music in front of us before Maestro Escalada comes to join us. Enjoy this process of immersing yourself in this vibrant and amazing music!

  • Please continue to practice alignment – breath – movement sequences as Elena assigned. These practices should be 10-12 min or longer, and no less than 3 times a week.

  1. Moment of stillness — eyes closed, turning attention inward, reconnecting with all sensations of the body
  2. Slow, smooth, deep and even breath — hands on abdomen, feeling the body expand with inhale and condense with exhale
  3. Align the body by drawing your attention to each part of the body, beginning with feet, finishing with crown of head
  4. Continue with breath/movement flow exercises as practiced in rehearsal

Observe and remember your sensations and feelings at the end of session. The desirable outcome should bring

    • Light, spacious, flexible body — ready for direct experience with self and the world, eager to connect and enjoy, longing to sing
    • Mind curious and open, non-judgemental,
    • Playful, welcoming spirit

This week we spent a lot of time talking about alignment specifically. Keep it in mind during your days!

We are preparing the following pieces for the Festival:

Pueblito, mi Pueblo

  • We reviewed this briefly
  • As you are working at home:
    • Hold the notes their full length
    • Keep the tempo going (it is slow, but not as slow as you wanted!)
    • Review chromatics in the section beginning at m. 12
  • Pronunciation file is attached below
  • S2: Please also learn the Alto part from measure 12 to the end.

  • We reviewed this briefly.

El Último Café

  • Sang through and reviewed the Spanish diction
  • Worked on the feel of the Tango, light and dancing
  • For next time:
    • Have this well-learned–words should not be tripping you up any more

Missa Criolla

  • We reviewed each movement in detail
  • Alto 2s should be on the tenor part down to an F, anything lower, go up to the Alto line
  • A handful of Soprano 2s are singing the Alto part (as assigned in rehearsal)
  • For next week:
    • Have all notes and rhythms learned
    • Understand the layout–where do you go when
    • Alto 2s be sure of when you are on the tenor or alto line

El Pambiche Lento

  • We read through the words in rhythm
  • For next week
    • Review all text and rhythms
    • Learn notes as well
