Prep 3 – Monday, Jazmine
We had another great week in Prep 3! Before we dive into our review, I wanted to say a quick note about our upcoming rehearsals. Some of you (singers and families) may have noticed that we’ve been focusing almost solely on learning repertoire. Because Prep 3 has such talented and hardworking singers this year, we’ve given them a lot of performance time at the All Choir Concert, We Are A Circle. The flip side of that is that we will continue to spend the vast majority of the remaining rehearsal time focusing on learning and polishing performance pieces (as opposed to learning dances, rounds, or other more traditional Cantabile activities). Please know that while I wholeheartedly wish that we had enough time to do the activities that both the singers and I love so much, I believe that my first priority is making sure that they are prepared to have a successful concert and recital experience. I don’t want a single singer to walk up on stage not feeling like they are completely ready to deliver their best.
That being said, we started this week by reviewing our welcome song, “Fenga Alafa” and having different students lead on the instruments. After some fun warm ups, we sang through “We Are A Circle” – please review these words at home, as we will sing this by memory at the concert. You can listen to a professional recording here. (Please keep in mind that this recording has harmony on it, and Prep 3 will only be singing the main melody throughout the song.)
Next we started a fun new piece called “The Secret”. This will be the solo piece that Prep 3 sings by themselves at the concert. Please spend some time this week reviewing the words to the song, as we will be starting to learn the harmony next week.
Then we continued by reviewing the form to “Thula Kliezo”. You can see our analysis in the photo below! I was very proud of the students ability to track and analyze what was going on in the piece. As a challenge this week, see if you can sing it from memory just from the photo!
We continued our journey into new music, by starting “Can You Hear Me”. We will ONLY be singing the refrains on this piece, and Intermediate will be singing the verses. Prep 3 Monday will be singing Part 1, and Prep 3 Tuesday will sing Part 2. Please see recordings above!
Finally, we finished by reviewing our harmony to “Fly Away Horse”. This will be sung at our recital, so it very important that the singers review their music at home and begin to memorize the words and the form.
Prep 3 – Tuesday, Amy
Prep 3 singers had a very productive rehearsal this week. First of all, I saw a huge improvement in focus and staying on task this week, This allowed us to get through a lot of music and do some really nice singing! We began our class with a new singing game called “On a Mountain.” In this game, singers take turns singing a short solo line. It was wonderful to hear so many solo voices this week! We went on to talk about the dotted sixteenth note rhythms in this piece and notate the rhythm,
This week we started working on the Prep 3 solo piece for our end of the year concert, it’s called “The Secret.” Singers very quickly picked up this new piece and are doing a great job singing in two parts. We continued to work on “I Am” and are just about memorized on this piece. We started a new piece, “There has to be a Song,” that we’ll be singing with all of the other choirs at the concert, too. Finally, we finished learning the piece “The Fly Away Horse.”
