Prep 2 Blog #5 Week of March 13, 2017

Hello Prep 2 Singers & Families! We had a good rehearsal this week. We started by learning a new folk song and singing game called “Dinah.” Singers took turns being the “mystery soloist” and enjoyed trying to guess who was singing.  After playing the game, we, as a class, wrote out the rhythm of song and derived the solfege melody syllables. I was impressed with how quickly and independently the singers were able to accomplish this!

After warming up our voices a bit, we worked on three of our choral pieces, “We Can Plant a Forest,” “I Am,” and “Thula Klizeo.” All three of these pieces are coming along nicely.

We will continue to work on these as well as add a few more pieces for our end of the year performances.

Singers should have brought home a flier for Cantabile’s Singing Summer Camp – we’d love to have you join us for two weeks of great fun and music!! If you have any questions about the camp, please let me know.

Dear Parents,

I was so glad to be back to sing with your children this week!

We started our class with the song Sarasponda, a nonsense song with hand motions that correspond with each word or syllable.

One we had warmed up, we sang John Kanaka and learned the simple folk dance that goes with it.  The children identified the rhythm pattern TiriTiri within the song.

The children remembered that there is also a Tiritiri in J’entends le Moulin.  After playing this game, the children listened for a new rhythm in this song, and identified Ti-Tiri. They learned how to write it on the board, and to recognize it on the staff.

The children read a mystery song from the staff, which turned out to be Dog and Cat.  The children enjoyed making up funny verses for the song.

We sang 3 more of our French songs: Jean Petit, Chocolat Chaud, and Vent Frais.  This kids are really getting the hang of the french words!

Some of you have asked for recordings of the songs we are working on.  I will try and find—or make— some good ones and send them off to you.

Thank you and I’ll see you next week!
