Prep 1 Tuesday, Jazmine
We had another week full of music making in Prep 1! This week we continued working on our inner listening skills by singing “Little Peter Rabbit” – a song where we ‘take away’ a word each time we sing through the lyrics. This supports the singers in having to internalize the song and sing it ‘in their heads’ as they sing it out loud. It’s a phenomenal skill that supports them in being able to sing difficult intervals and in harmony in Prep 2, and beyond!
After some fun warms ups, we reviewed our “Rainbow Song“, including the lyrics to the bridge, “Listen with your eyes, listen with your ears, and sing everything you see. I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing along with me.” This will be one of our recital songs in May, and it’s coming along quite beautifully!
Next, we reviewed our “Apple Tree” game and song, including passing the apple on the beat. We looked at beat sheets which had the rhythms written out and discovered the pattern of the song: the first and third lines are the same, and so are the second and fourth. We then sang the song both on it’s rhythm (using ta’s and ti-ti’s) and on its solfege (sol, mi, la, and do).
Then, we dove further into the word of rhythm and had a blast playing a round of “pick up sticks” where each singer drew a popsicle stick out of the pile and had to perform the rhythm indicated. They were able to perform all the way up to four beats with confidence – way to go! We then practiced our “Rain Drops” song, including practicing using tall, beautiful vowels on our “Ah” sections, and reviewed the words for the second verse, “If all the sunbeams were bubble gum and ice cream.” Keep practicing this week my friends!
To round out our time together, we played “Doggie Doggie” which helps with building solo singing skills, as well as critical listening skills. Each singer must identify who has the bone by the sung response in the song – they are training their ears to listen for location, timber (or color of sound), volume, and nuance in singing. Plus this game reinforces pitch matching and it just a lot of fun! Finally, we played our favorite game of BlueBird, and I was reflecting on how far they’ve come with this game since the start of the year!
As a reminder, our recital will be Tuesday, May 9th at 3:30 pm in the Parish Hall. Please make sure your singer comes in full uniform: Cantabile red polo, black twill skirt with black tights, or black pants, black socks, and plain black shoes. We will be sending out sign-up sheets for the potluck after the recital next week.
Prep 1 Thursday, Emily
This week we focused on 2 skills: Standing in a line like a choir, and the difference between beat and rhythm. We started our class with My Little Boat Turned Over so we could welcome each other by name.
We stood in line with our hands at our sides for our warm ups this week, so that they could practice standing like a choir, as they will in their recital in May. I played the piano for them as well, so I could hear them sing on their own with out my support. Their voices are really coming along!
We stomped to the beat of 2,4,6,8, and then we clapped the rhythm. Some of the children are still struggling with this distinction. The BEAT tells us how fast the song goes, while the RHYTHM of the song goes with the words. You can reinforce these skills at home by asking your children to keep the beat or the rhythm while they are listening to any kind of music. I was asking the children to switch off between keeping the beat and the rhythm of this chant. Then I brought out some flash cards with rhythms on them. The children selected the correct rhythms from the cards, and we made sure they were right by comparing them to the chant.
I changed the cards out, had them read a new rhythm, and asked them to guess the next song from the rhythm and melody without the words. The were able to correctly identify it as Doggie, Doggie. I got a chance to hear several of the children sing on their own during this game, and I noticed that many of them are singing out more as well as correctly matching my pitch.
After all that work, we played Ring Around the Rosy and My Poor Hand is Shaking.
We ended our class with 2 French songs: Jean Petit and Chocolat Chaud.
