Prep 3 Blog

Greetings, Prep 3 Families!

Thank you for another great week of rehearsing! Continue studying your scores at home, and practicing each song from memory – you know them better than you think! Please also remember to complete pages 15-16 in your musicianship books this week!

Concert Season is Coming!

We are preparing for two wonderful performances – Prep 3 will be featured in Cantabile’s All-Choir Spring Concert on Saturday May 14th at 1pm (call time 11:30), with our dress rehearsal taking place on Thursday May 12th at  First United Methodist Church, Palo Alto, 4:15-6:30 PM.

Prep 3 will also perform in recitals the following week:

Laney’s Prep 3: Monday May 16th 5:00-6:30 pm

Katie’s Prep 3: Tuesday May 17th 5:30-6:30pm

Uniforms

New Cantabile singers will need uniforms for our spring recitals and concert – please order as soon as possible at Merry Mart Uniforms, as they tend to sell out of the Prep skirts fairly quickly. Singers will need to be in full Cantabile uniform at the May Spring Concert and Prep 3 Recitals. Please note that Prep 3 singers need to be wearing the red polo shirts with the Cantabile logo, and uniform black pants for boys, and skirts for girls.

Trivia Question: From what culture does the game and song Little Sally Walker come from?

Recap

This week, the kids started playing Little Sally Walker as soon as they arrived! We also created some cool polyrhythms on the sticks by playing and saying the rhythm of our favorite drinks. Then we revisited a favorite dance, Great Big House in New Orleans. We then finished transcribing the song, first its rhythm and solfege, and then adding bar-lines to discover it was in 4/4 time. We then wrote the entire song on the staff in C-doh. The children used the same notes to compose their own songs, which they performed for one another on the xylophones.  They created some beautiful melodies! We reviewed the rhythm and solfege for the canon Rooster in the Stew, then the children sang it in beautiful 2-part harmony. Have your child review the motions and sing the song this week! We also sang solfege patterns and reviewed the solfege  in several of our songs as a precursor to singing them: Kokoleoko (almost memorized!) Un Lorito de Verapaz (keep reviewing the Spanish, and memorize for next week!) Seize the Day (sounding great) Rattlin’  Bog (please  remember to always use your singing voices in this song – and every song!)

Action Items

Canons

We are continuing to work on a number of canons, which are excellent tools for learning to sing in 2 and 3-part harmony. Some of these are:

  • Two New Blue Sing and Rejoice
  • Shine, Gentle Sun
  • Laughing, Singing
  • Sweetly Sings the Donkey
  • Let’s Put the Rooster

Have your child teach you ALL these canons and sing together in harmony with movements – extend, and see if your child can sing it for you in solfege – or clap the rhythm in canon – all these activities are so much fun, and musically enriching.

Movement and Games

We are continuing to learn new dances and games, all which highlight the different cultures from which our songs come this semester. Some of these are:

  1. Los Machetes, a Mexican stick dance.
  2. Little Sally Walker
  3. Bonjour, mes amis, a welcome partner dance set to French text
  4. Great Big House in New Orleans- my class revisited this song last week, then dictated the rhythm and solfege on their whiteboards  – next week, we will dictate this song in the key of C.
  5. Oats and Peas and Barley Grow, a fun circle dance!
  6. Welcome, Bienvenidos, a welcome partner dance set to Spanish text
  7. The South African dance, Pata Pata, based upon the famous songby Miriam Makeba – music attached – please dance at home -my class in particular needs some practice!
  8. The traditional Irish Jig, set to the tune of The Irish Washerwoman– music attached – please dance at home!
  9. El Capitan, a fun song and game set to Spanish text.

Trivia Answer: The African-American culture.
