Prep 2 Blog

Greetings, Prep 2 Families!

We had such a lovely first week of Prep 2 Classes here at Cantabile! I have reports of much singing, dancing, and learning, and it was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces, making music together! Please read the updates below, one from Jazmine (Thursday 5:00 Prep 2), and Katie (Monday and Tuesday Prep 2), and one from Emily (Thursday 3:45 Prep 2). Enjoy our recounts of class, and the different tools and suggestions we have in order for you to encourage music-making and song-practice at home!

From Katie and Jazmine:

  • In honor of our Latin American theme, we started with the super fun welcome song, Welcome, Bienvenidos. Have your child teach you the song and the movements!
  • We reviewed basic rhythms by saying and playing the rhythm of our names!
  • We used our scarves and Bubbles the Fish to warm up our voices and practice our solfege.
  • We sang a fun partner song, I Love the Mountains, which the children loved! Have your child teach you the song and show you how to sing it in 2-part harmony!
  • We started a lovely new song for our Spring Concert, This Shall Be For Music. Please listen and review at home this week.
  • We danced and sang Down the River
  • Please also listen to Manx Lullaby this week.

Your child went home with a folder containing sheet music and a theory page. They should bring their folders and homework to class each week. Please be sure your child works on the theory page at home, as we will go over it together next week, with the help of our xylophones!

From Emily:

I enjoyed meeting all of my Prep 2 students this week.  We have a very lively class, and had so much fun with our opening dance, All ‘Round the Brickyard, and singing our names with the song Hickety Tickety Bumble Bee. Have your child share these activities with you this week! In addition to warming up and talking about making higher and lower sounds, we learned about beat and rhythm in songs, and we used body signs to identify higher and lower sounds in a song that we sang. I was especially excited to see that some of our students can stomp the beat and clap the rhythm at the same time. That is quite tricky. In addition, we learned part of our first concert song, Manx Lullaby, which you will find in the folders we sent home with the children. Please listen and review with your child. We looked at pictures of a dove, a rowan tree, and a lapwing, which are all mentioned in this beautiful traditional song from the Isle of Man, which is located in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland.  If you get a chance, please show your child where it is on the map. In celebration of our nature theme, we ended our class with the very fun game, We Are Dancing in the Forest – have your child share this game with your family!

Your child went home with a folder containing sheet music and a theory page. They should bring their folders and homework to class each week. Please be sure your child works on the theory page at home, as we will go over it together next week, with the help of our xylophones!

Have a great weekend and see you next week!
