Prep 2 Blog

Dear Prep 2 Parents,

Welcome back to our blog!  We have a had a hiatus of a couple of weeks due to some transitions at Cantabile, and I am excited to share with you what your children have been doing!

Your children have been working on a number of skills:

  • Beat and Rhythm:  What is the difference?
  • Identifying simple rhythms including Ta and Titi (quarter note and 2 eighth notes together.)
  • Reading simple rhythms
  • Hearing and identifying the solfege syllables Sol, Mi and La and Do.
  • Singing in tune
  • Basic vocal techniques, like breathing and relaxing the jaw.
  • Reading music from the staff and writing simple notation of the staff

Since we have several children in this class who were with me last year, either in prep 1 or 2, we have really been able to hit the ground running, and the learning curve for the group has been very quick.

I have implemented a new tradition in this class!  We have a class theme song that we sing after warm ups every week:  To-day’s the Time for Singing.  The children really love this song! It gets us all singing together right from the beginning of class, and builds enthusiasm for the tasks ahead.   I have noticed that this class is already singing strongly and together.  I hear nearly every voice ringing out when we do our warm ups or songs.

This week we learned a new dance called Alabama Gal, which is a reel-type dance that is danced in 2 lines.  We also did the the dance Zudio, which they already knew.  Folk dancing is an important part of what we do in our class.  By moving our bodies while we sing, we learn to feel the music in ourselves.  Plus it is fun!

We have played the game Obwisana a couple of times.  This African game requires us to move our bodies to the beat while moving bean bags around the circle.  It is surprisingly difficult, and your kids were really getting it yesterday.

This week, we reviewed the notes we know—Sol, Mi, La and Do—in the songs Ring Around the Rosy and Pease Porridge Hot.

We have been working on our recital songs, which are Shanandoah, S’vivon and Piglet’s Christmas.

I am very pleased with the progress of this class, as well as the wonderful, enthusiastic singing!  I look forward to the rest of the semester!

Thank you and I’ll see you next week.

Emily
