Prep 1 Blog

Greetings, Prep 1 Families,

Thank you for another great week in Prep 1 Chorus! The children are really starting to sing out and express themselves, and I am hearing some beautiful, in-tune singing! We are still working through our Halloween Unit, while practicing important musical concepts and also touching upon our recital songs. Thank you for continuing to use this blog as a source for your child’s musical progress during the week, and for ensuring your child arrives on-time to chorus each week!

Rehearsal Recap

  • The children gathered together as we sang the American folksong, Come Along, Everybody, with varied motions
  • We had the chance to sing everyone’s name in My Spooky Boat Turned Over. The children made a circle and held hands as they walked to the beat, a difficult and impressive skill to master! Have your child teach you this song and dance this week:

My spooky boat turned over

As the wind began to blow

It was all because of (name)

Who had never learned to row

  • The children explored their vocal range with our Halloween Vocal Explorations – this time, each child performed one as a solo after which everyone echoed a response.
  • The children shared their favorite hobbies with the warm-up “I Love to Sing,” which we performed with body percussion.
  • We passed Otis the Owl and sang:

Hickety Tickety Owls in the tree

Sing your favorite animal for me

This allowed each child the opportunity to share their favorite animal and sing a solo on the pitches sol-mi and lah! They sounded great and are becoming more confident! Once each child had sung their solo, they got rhythm sticks and helped keep the steady beat of the song.

  • The children kept their sticks and played and chanted a number of Halloween Rhythms. It was so fun to discover that “witch” has one syllable and uses a “tah,” and that “monster” has two syllables and uses a “ti-ti.” Reinforce this activity at home by having your child clap and say they name of items around the house, such as “table,” or “chair.” Have your child derive if it’s a “tah” or “ti-ti!”
  • The children loved revisiting our spooky improvisational dance, We Are Scary Skeletons!
  • The children clapped and sang a “mystery song” on solfege, identifying it as a song we learned last week, “Pumpkin, Pumpkin, Big and Round.”
  • The children sang the pumpkin song and “walked” through a “pumpkin patch” of rhythms. Every time the song ended, the children picked a pumpkin and shared its rhythm with the class.

  • We started learned another recital song, The Marvelous Toy!
  • We ended with our familiar goodbye song, Shake Hands With Friends

This week:

In addition to going over the activities mentioned above, please continue to have your child listen to I’m Thankful, The Marvelous Toy, and this Mp3 of Sleigh Song:
