Prelude II Blog

Dear Prelude II Singers & Families,

I hope everyone is staying cool in this heat wave! We had a fun rehearsal this week, despite the very warm conditions. We started off with a song called “Riding in a Buggy,” where we improvised new lyrics and inserted each singer’s name in to the song. We learned a clapping pattern (or ostinato) that we performed while we sang.

Students were given the rhythm of a new song, “Apple Tree,” and read the rhythm using our rhythm syllables (ta & ti-ti). Next week, we will play a fun game that goes with this song. We then decoded a familiar song, “Here Comes a Bluebird” as we reviewed more rhythms and our first three solfege syllables: sol, mi, & la.

We warmed up our voices and focused on opening our mouths and singing with tall and beautiful vowels. One way to remind yourself of this is to think about how Mary Poppins might speak or sing something and try to recreate those round vowels and spacious sound 🙂

We worked on two of our performance pieces, “Snowflake Carol” and “Little Snowflake.” Singers should have the “twinkle little star” section of “Snowflake Carol” memorized for next week! We added scarves to one section of our “Little Snowflake” song.

We ended our time together with a folk dance to “Oh, A-Hunting We Will Go.” We improvised new verses and learned a new folk dance move we call “peeling the banana.”

A few reminders for next week: 1) Singers should bring their folders to class EACH WEEK.  Without their folders, singers may have to share music which makes it harder to fully participate and stay engaged; 2) Next week we will have some gently used uniforms available for purchase. If you’d like to see if we have your child’s size (in polo shirts and black skirts only), please plan to bring cash or a check to purchase. Shirts are $10 and skirts are $15.

See you next week!
