Greetings, Prep 3 Families!
Thank you for another great week of rehearsing! We made some real strides working on the quality of your sound, through the use of pure and unified vowels, and working to blend voices with one another.
Our focus in the coming weeks will be memorizing all our music, and continuing to create a “dynamics map” for each of our songs. We will also discuss the text and meaning of each song in greater detail, so we can truly feel connected to this music. Please continue memorizing your songs, and thinking about images they convey, and their overall message!
Concert Season is Coming!
We are preparing for two wonderful performances – Prep 3 will be featured in Cantabile’s All-Choir Spring Concert on Saturday May 14th at 1pm (call time 11:30), with our dress rehearsal taking place on Thursday May 12th at First United Methodist Church, Palo Alto, 4:15-6:30 PM.
Prep 3 will also perform in recitals the following week:
Laney’s Prep 3: Monday May 16th 5:00-6:30 pm
Katie’s Prep 3: Tuesday May 17th 5:30-6:30pm
New Cantabile singers will need uniforms for our spring recitals and concert – please order as soon as possible at Merry Mart Uniforms, as they tend to sell out of the Prep skirts fairly quickly. Singers will need to be in full Cantabile uniform at the May Spring Concert and Prep 3 Recitals. Please note that Prep 3 singers need to be wearing the red polo shirts with the Cantabile logo, and uniform black pants for boys, and skirts for girls.
Trivia Question: What does the word “rattlin’ mean in the song Hi Ho The Rattlin’ Bog??
This week, we had fun playing a new African-American improvisatory movement game, Little Sally Walker, where the children created new movements for their partner to mirror– so much fun! We also sang some of our favorite warm-ups which the singers helped to lead, including Tuning Tree, and Mama Made Me Mash My M and M’s. We extended our warm-ups into a rhythmic exercise, playing and indentifying the rhythm for Laughing, Singing, which the children are singing in beautiful 2-part harmony. We also learned a new canon for Spring, Shine Gentle Sun:. Have your child review the motions and sing the song this week! We also sang solfege patterns and reviewed the solfege in several of our songs as a precursor to singing them: Kokoleoko (almost memorized!) The Swing (keep memorizing and working on your part!) Seize the Day (off to a great start!) A Great Big Sea (almost memorized!) We also did a great musicianship activity – we derived the rhythm and solfege for Great Big House in New Orleans, and wrote it on the staff in C major. We will write it in F next week!
This weekend, please sit down with your music, and listen to the following songs:
We are continuing to work on a number of canons, which are excellent tools for learning to sing in 2 and 3-part harmony. Some of these are:
Have your child teach you ALL these canons and sing together in harmony with movements – extend, and see if your child can sing it for you in solfege – or clap the rhythm in canon – all these activities are so much fun, and musically enriching.
Movement and Games
We are continuing to learn new dances and games, all which highlight the different cultures from which our songs come this semester. Some of these are:
Trivia Answer: It means “splendid!”
