Spring Waters, by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), arr. Elena Sharkova

Use these part recordings and this professional recording to practice.

Soprano 1

Soprano 2

Alto

Professional recording

Be sure you know the translation of the Russian text.  Use the translation on the inside front cover of your score to write it in your music.  Keep in mind that the description of spring arriving after winter is not only literal, but can reflect the sweeping out of old elements of life that are no longer useful or are “dead” and the rebirth of new “life,” new habits, ways of thinking, ideas, etc.

If you were absent Monday, be sure you have the last page of the score – it was left off some of the octavos.  The last page should be page 8, and if your octavo is missing it, there should have been a single-page copy of it in your binder.  See Natalya at the beginning of rehearsal next week if you need it.

  • Ms. 4 – the final consonant of “sñek” comes on the rest (the & of beat 2).
  • Ms. 5 – note the ritardando and make a short break between the dotted eighth note and the sixteenth note on beat 4.
  • Ms. 11 – Sop 2 and Alto, put a short break between the final two eighth notes of the measure.
  • Ms. 15 & 16 – Altos, review your part here.  Take special note of the C – it is very tempting to sing “Do-Mi-So-Do” here, but note it is actually “Do-Mi-La-Do.”
  • Ms. 18 – Altos, practice finding the D-natural moving to the D-flat on beat 4.
  • Ms. 19-20 – All parts – take these measures (including the pick-up notes on the previous page) apart and practice slowly.  Elena assigned the divisi in ms. 20 – if you’re not sure which note you should sing, check with her.
  • Ms. 22 – note the “meno mosso,” meaning “less motion” or “slower.”
  • Ms. 22-27 – the ending “t” in the word “id(j)ot” should be very soft, not plosive, and the cut-offs should all be exactly on the eighth rests.  Also beware of the vowel in this word – it must be a closed Oh
  • Ms. 31 – Altos and Sop 2s – change the quarter note on the 4th beat to an eighth rest and an eighth note, like Sop 1. SAME IN MS. 29
  • Ms. 33 – add a fermata over the last eighth note in the measure.
  • Memorize for the January 29th rehearsal

Light of a Clear Blue Morning by Dolly Parton, arr. Craig Hella Johnson & Richard Gabrillo

Use this recording for reference.

  • Be sure to sing the opening nine measures on the B where written (no lower octave until the Altos move in measure 10).
  • Note the breath marks in ms. 24, 32, 33 and 35.  There should be no breaks in the lines anywhere else in this section.
  • Ms. 34 – add a crescendo over beats 3 & 4 and be sure to decrescendo in the next measure.
  • Page 8 – Members of Aria will sing the SSA Ensemble line.  Group 1-Alto 2; Group 2-Soprano 2; Group 3-Soprano 1; Group 4-Alto 1.  Read the instructions about when your line enters carefully.  Entrances do not happen in the order they are written on the page.
  • Memorize by January 29th.

Bedu Pako, arr. Meghan Quinlan

Use this recording for your reference.

Soprano 1

Soprano 2

Alto 1 & 2

We Rise Again by Leon Dubinsky, arr. Lydia Adams

  • Alto 2 – sing the Tenor part from ms. 13-18 and 29-39.  Otherwise, sing the Alto line.

January 25, 2018/Rehearsal #4

Dear Intermediate Singers, Jazmine, Amanda and I appreciate your thoughtful, respectful discussion at the end of rehearsal last night as we reminded ourselves what Cantabile is.  As one singer pointed out to me after rehearsal, Cantabile is all about singing, since our name means “song-like” or simply “singing.”  And yes, this is primarily what we are about at Cantabile.  In […]
