Prep 1 –  Tuesday, Jazmine

It was another wonderful Tuesday full of music making at Cantabile!  We started off by singing our new welcome song, “Buenos Dias” and I was so impressed by how quickly the singers have picked it up!  Then we dove straight into scarf warm ups and “I love to sing and play”, and we discussed how we stand when we’re in performance, in preparation for our upcoming recital in May.

After our warmups, we had fun creating our own animal rhythms, including learning a new one for three sounds called “tir-ri-ti” for “unicorn”.  And we reviewed our favorite solo singing game “Hickety TIckety Bumble Bee”, which helps reinforce pitch matching on sol and mi.

Since our voices were all warmed up, we dove right into repertoire, reviewing “Gonna Build A Mountain” and making up fun movements for each verse.  We will be singing this at our recital in May, and still have a few more verses to learn in the next few weeks!

Then we took a much-needed dance break for a round of “Looby Loo” before decoding the rhythm to “Bee Bee Bumble Bee”.  We reviewed the sol, mi, and la pitches that we transcribed from last week and the singers were able to derive the rhythm with ease!  (I was so proud!)  As we played the game, we had fun switching between keeping the steady beat on our bodies, and clapping the rhythm of the words.

Next we played a round of “Bluebird” (always a favorite) and all of a sudden, it was time to go!

A quick note of thanks to all of the parents who helped support this past week when students were having a more challenging time focusing – I appreciate your support and interventions, and am grateful to have such attentive parents in my room!  Thank you!

Emily – Prep 1 Thursday

Dear Parents,

I was ever so glad to be back with your children this week!

We began the class with the fun nonsense song Sarasponda, which has hand movements that go with each word or syllable.  This was quite challenging for them this first time, but they will get it.  It is a lot of fun to do, and we will be playing with it more.

After warming up their voices, we found lots of ways to show the beat for the song Cobbler, Cobbler.  We used a drum to hear the beat while we played the rhythm on sticks, and we had different groups doing different parts.  Then we wrote the rhythm on the board.

I changed the rhythm on the board and had them read the new rhythm.  It was the rhythm to song Little Sally Water, which is a fun circle game.  We learned the song and the game, and played several rounds. The children then identified the solfege for the song, and we put it on the tone ladder.

We sang our French round Chocolat Chaud, and finished our class with a round of Jean Petit Qui Danse.

Thank you and I’ll see you next week!
