January 21st/ Rehearsal # 3

Greetings, Intermediate Singers,

Thank you for a great rehearsal this evening. I am so impressed by your focus and enthusiasm, and it was so fun to play Forbidden Solfege Pattern with you! In contrast to last week, we sang through many more songs, and perhaps skimmed over various details in order to gain a general familiarity with the music. Next week, we will again be more focused on challenging sections, Spanish pronunciation, and save full run-throughs of songs for the second half of rehearsal.

Trivia Question: Our Irish Dance (called The Siege of Carrick) is in the time signature traditionally used for jigs. What is this time signature?

Action Items for this Week:

  • Continue to listen to and study Tres canciones de Los Elementos (Three Songs about the Elements) Now that we have started the process of learning it, listen for your vocal line as you follow along in your score. How does the music depict these elements: Wind, Rain, and Fire?
  • Also prepare for Tres canciones by singing the G Major Scale with hand signs, but also incorporating some chromatic pitches – particularly “me” (flat mi), “le” (flat la) “teh” (flat ti) and “ra” (flat re). Please refer to the hand signs page in your binders for help.
  • Continue listening to Seven Wonders while following along in your score – what is an “anvil?” Practice singing the “pig section” in your finest operatic voice! Continue studying the solfege for this section.
  • Listen to Like a Singing Bird, a beautiful partner song we are performing with Ensemble, and will be starting next week. The lyrics are based upon poetry by two famous poets: Robert Burns and Christina Rosetti – what do the words mean to you?
  • Listen and sing along to Hi Ho The Ratlin’ Bog – can you identify the different instruments?
  • Start to memorize “Wild Mountain Thyme.”

Musicianship A: Please complete pages 7-9 in Book 2. For those of you who do not yet have a book, they are on their way, just please continue working from the photocopies-here is a link to these pages if you did not receive in class! Please print and complete! Those of you who are finished with Book 2 should continue using musictheory.net, and your completed books for study and review throughout the semester.

Musicianship B: Please complete pages 7-9 in Book 3. Those of you who are finished with Book 3 should continue using musictheory.net, and your completed books for study and review throughout the semester. Study the G Major Scale and be prepared to do some sight-singing and dictation in the key.

Trivia Answer: 6/8 time! (in our case, the music moves in continuous eighth notes!)

Have a great week, and see you next Thursday!

Katie
