Greetings, Intermediate Singers!

Thank you so much for a wonderfully productive rehearsal. It was such a joy to work on refining your sound, to dig into the details of your German pronunciation, and to be able to work on more songs in general within our rehearsal, still with plenty of time left for dancing and body percussion. Please keep up the good work in bringing your positive focus and joyful presence each week!

Save the Date: Thursday September 29th Masterclass with Jace Wittig

Parents are welcome to sit in on this special opportunity for the singers of Intermediate Chorus to perform and receive expert instruction from a superb musician and performer. The Masterclass portion of our rehearsal will take place from 6:15-7:15, during which time the singers will perform and work on 1-2 selections from their current repertoire. Please join us!

Bist du bei mir – you are singing this for Jace next week!

  • Also remember to sing through your vowels without stopping your air, and when you sing above an E, think of the clouds motion you created, which helped achieve such a beautiful, light, yet rounded sound, particularly whenever you sing “geh ich mich Freuden.”
  • And also listento Bist du bei mir whilst following along in your score. Clap and count the rhythm as you go, in particular the second half of the song. Remember it is in ¾ (think 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3) and switch it up by performing the 3 rhythm block (clap, chest, chest) while counting.
  • Continue to MEMORIZE – though you may use your scores when singing for Jace if needed.

The Moon – you are also singing this for Jace

  • Continue to listen to this song, and taking note of your part. Tricky sections to watch for are 18-23, 43-48, 53-end. Here is a simple recording of Part 2:
  • Watch for all the whole notes in the song – circle them in your score and sing them as you perform the 4 rhythm clock (clap, chest, chest, pat)
  • Start to MEMORIZE- though you may use your scores when singing for Jace if needed.

New Song! Allunde Alluya: Please listen and watch the video of Cantabile performing this in 2012, which also features beautiful movements which we will perform at the winter concert! This is a beautiful African Prayer Lullaby with Swahili text.

Shiru

  • Great job learning the refrain in solfege, then putting it to text. Then you did a great job singing through the song, even though it has some tricky sections.
  • Continue to listen whilst following along in your score, and listen for the two vocal parts 1 and 2. Please take note of the Hebrew pronunciation – this is based upon Psalm 98, and means “Sing!”

Mid-Winter

  • This was starting to sound very beautiful this week. Pay attention to your vowels, keeping them slimmer and taller, rather than “wide and smiley,” and always feel your breath carrying the vowels on an exhalation. Feel your ribcage expand and release between phrases in order to master these long legato lines.
  • Speak the text of this poem by Christina Rosetti, and take special care with crisp, ending consonants.
  • Sing the opening motif “mi-re-mi-fa-sol-la-sol” and find how many times it comes back in the music, and Part 2 take note of all the sections in 2-part harmony: m. 19, mm. 37-45 and m. 75.

  • For those of you who have not yet done so, please print, complete and bring back the attached All About Me sheet for our next rehearsal. It will be great fun to share these with one another in the coming weeks!
  • Review our Rhythm Block Body Warm-up, and watch the fabulous Keith Terry reviewing it in slow motion.

Musicianship A

Excellent work reading and playing the rhythms on the rhythms cubes. You also reviewed C major, F major and G major scales, and practiced writing them on the staff. Lovely work sight-singing Scotland’s Burning, La Cloche, and O, How Lovely. This week, singers working out of Book 1 should complete pages 17-20, and singers working out of Book 2 should complete pages 9-10. Please complete and give to Simon first thing when you arrive next Thursday.  Please do your homework, and if you do not understand it, ASK MATTHEW!  

Musicianship B                                                                                                                         

Excellent work reading and performing Ice Cream rhythms!  You then split up into small groups and composed your own rhythms. Remember next week, we will be doing small group sight-singing in F major. This week, singers working out of Book 3 should complete pages 9-10. Please complete and give to Simon first thing when you arrive next Thursday. Please do your homework, and if you do not understand it, ASK ME! 

Singers who have completed Book 3: As your third assignment on Noteflight, I would like you to do the following:

  1. Review the diatonic chords of F major. Also review inversions.
  2. Log-in to Cantabile’s Noteflight (first name and first letter of last name) with password cantabile2016
  3. Create a Binary Composition in F for two instruments or piano. Each section should have the same number of measures, between 6 and 12 or more if you like, but the number should be even. Be sure the melody resides in the top voice, and utilize contrasting rhythmic values, dynamics, and articulation.
  4. Add triads to, or harmonize your melody in the lower instrument, with the diatonic triads of F major (mostly using I, VI, V and vi chords).  Feel free to use root, first or second inversion. Please write to me if you do not understand.
