Mondays are great in Cantabile world because we have rehearsals on those nights! Mornings are full of anticipation and rehearsal planning for me and my wonderful assistant conductor, Jennah Delp. We exchange emails and talk on the phone, we meet right before the rehearsal to iron out the last details before our equally excited choristers start coming into the beautiful and spacious parish hall of the Foothills church…
I don’t know how many rehearsals I directed in my life — most probably I am into thousands now!– but my heart still fills up with happy anticipation of that moment when we all take our first breath together and begin the singing.
Do I have a dream job? You bettcha! Seeing these young people flower with joy, burst with energy, open their hearts to music, to each other, and the big wonderful world around them — this is what my Monday nights are like!! And then there is a short time right before the end of the rehearsal (5-10 min long, that’s all) when the parents sneak into the hall to peek at the rehearsal, and I see their faces light up, big smiles coming. They don’t know it, but I see their shoulders relaxing and I can see them taking deeper breaths.
In all honestly, I sometime finish just a few minutes late so that the parents could see a bit of our Monday magic. Let the truth be known!
Tonight won’t be different — we have an American jazz standard, an Argentinean tango, an African party song and a monkey chant from Bali to rehearse.
Parents, remember – -you don’t have to wait until concert time to see the magic! And you are more than welcome to join us on the floor for the monkey chant. I mean it!
Have a great Monday, everyone!
