Prep 1 –  Tuesday, Jazmine

It was another wonderful Tuesday full of music making at Cantabile!  We started this week by reviewing the song and dance for “Bow Wow Wow”.  Then, after some warm ups, the singers were able to decode the rhythm to “Bow Wow Wow” by identifying if each beat had one sound (a “ta”), two sounds (a “ti-ti”) or no sound (a “sh” or, “rest”).  You can see what they discovered below!

Next we learned the second verse to the “If All The Raindrops” song, which includes “If all the sun beams were bubble gum and ice cream.”  We reviewed our motions to go with the song, and practiced making a nice tall choral “ah” sound on the bridge for “Standing outside, with our mouths open wide”.

Next we learned a new circle game called “Farmer In The Dell” and I was delighted by how quickly everyone caught on to the song and started singing along.  Then we sand through a round of “Looby Loo” before reviewing the words and movements to “Build A Mountain”, which we will be performing at our recital in May.

Finally, we ended our time together by learning a new game called “Apple Tree”. We’ll have fun decoding this melody and rhythm in the weeks to come, but for now we just enjoyed seeing who the last person out was and passing the apple to the beat.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone next week!

Prep 1 –  Thursday, Emily

Dear Parents,

This week we continued our work on tapping the rhythm, and we learned an important new concept:  the rest.

We started our class by showing the beat in different ways in the song Dinah, and then I taught them the fun game Bow Wow Wow.  Once they had mastered the game, the children sat with me and kept the beat on their knees.  They listened for a beat with no sound, and raised their hand when they noticed it.  They identified 3 times where there was a beat with no sound.  Then we called it a rest, and I showed them how to write it on the board.

The children worked on tapping the rhythm in the song Hi Little Woodpecker.  The goal of this exercise is for the children to be able to tap the rhythm while they are singing, and then tap it again without singing.  This is quite challenging for them!  We will continue to work on this skill over time.

They enjoyed playing the game Mouse, Mousie.  This song contains a Do, and we will soon be adding that to our melodic repertoire.

We finished our class by singing Chocolat Chaud and Jean Petit.

Thank you and I’ll see you next week!

Prep 1 –  Tuesday, Jazmine It was another wonderful Tuesday full of music making at Cantabile!  We started this week by working on our “inner listening” skills with the song “Little Peter Rabbit”.  By removing words phrase by phrase, this is a great exercise for internalizing a piece and being able to ‘hear it’ inside without singing it ‘outside’.   […]
