Bravi and V.T.G. Rehearsal Blog

Hi, Bravi and VTG:

I hope you’re enjoying your week off, and that you all had a chance to rest, celebrate, and re-focus!  We have lots of new repertoire coming your way over the next few weeks, and all of your conductors are looking forward to getting back to work.

Simon’s notes from last week’s rehearsal are below.  Please review them carefully and spend some quality time with your music before Monday’s rehearsal.

Action Items

  1. Have the following songs learned completely:
    1. Turn the World Around
    2. Famine Song
    3. I Dreamed of Rain
  2. Learn the background and story about each piece in the new program by reading the notes from this blog and the program notes in music scores (when provided)
  3. Listen (several times) to performance examples (follow links below when provided)
  4. Practice the latest yoga flow every day (Forward salute, forward arch, swan dive, forward bend, slow roll up; repeat.)
  5. Meditate at least 5-10 min every day
  6. Review the Vocalise Blog
Famine Song
  • The “ba-da”s in the beginning should feel quieter than the “hmms”. Remember that by default these will be louder because we are opening our mouths. Make the line as dynamically consistent as possible: we don’t have the melody here.
  • Measure 26 (and all similar places): basses need to make sure to be high enough on the B. Some singers were going only as far as G.
  • Measure 27: the low A needs to be sung in tune.
  • Try to learn measures 34–48 on your own: it will place us in good standing for Monday’s SATB rehearsal.

I Dreamed of Rain

  • Make sure the d+shadow vowel at the ends of words comes at the right spot, and is NOT louder than the actual word part of the word. They should be heard clearly but shouldn’t be “hit.”
  • In moving lines such as measure 6, sing rains with a “z” (a voiced consonant).  This is how we pronounce the word, and we should sing it thusly.
  • In places like measure 25, where we split into 3 parts, Tenors move to Baritone, and Altos cover the Tenor. We still need to confirm that this is the case in measure 67 (the very end).

Turn the World Around

  • Make sure this is relaxed and rhythmically precise. The syncopated feel of this song must be energetic but cannot rush.  “Sit back” on the beat.
  • The beginning (measure 5) is in unison on the Tenor line (possibly in similar spots too).
  • In places like measure 13, basses need to be sure that the D is high enough. This is especially important in measure 31, 39, 79, and 83 when the altos sing a D-flat against our D.
  • We didn’t cover much else, but keep in mind that around measure 57, do not rush the “life a-ba-tee” and be sure to accent the “ah” before the “hah”.
