Laney Armstrong

Dear Vocalise Singers,

What fun it was this week to sing with and hear Alexa and her band! Thank you for your flexibility and work as we accomplished a lot of different things in a dynamic rehearsal.

Announcements:

  • Rehearsal next week is normal–the recording session has been rescheduled for Monday, 2/29. You can check the online calendar for the most up-to-date versions of everything.
  • Elena assigned all singers to practice the sequence of

“moment of stillness –alignment — breath — movement — meditation”

three times per week, 15 min or more each time

This was reviewed carefully at the beginning of the rehearsal. Please, see the attached photo of the whiteboard for the flow reminder. There isn’t one “set way” of doing it but remember what you wish to achieve by the practice:

      • Light, energetic, flexible body — ready to live, connect, sing
      • Calm, clear, open mind
      • Curious, playful, welcoming spirit

  • Best of luck to Aria, Bravi, and VTG at the Gala on Saturday!
  • For next week: Please study “Tristeza”(handed out at the end of rehearsal) and “The Beatitudes” (attached) Please, listen to the youtube clips to get the feel of both songs (So VERY different!)

REMINDER: Please, review the handout you got at the rehearsal: it has precise plan for each rehearsal and the list of current repertoire. There is a lot of music in your folders — notice which ones are a repeat from December (for our February concert at ACDA and recording session on 2/1) and which are for the festival and the spring concerts. All music needs to stay fresh in your minds and voices.

25 January Rehearsal Review
[What Vocalise SSA covered]

Bedu Pako

Ran through top to bottom

Worked on:

  • Precision in the melodic line, particularly with the grace note, 16th notes, and the last three notes of the first phrase (eg. m. 22)
  • Phrase shape and precision in “dm”s from m 52 to 67

Hark, I Hear

  • Worked through each section
  • Particularly focused on getting rid of scooping. We are particularly scooping at “Hark I hear” and “As I near” (and the equivalent places in other verses. Thinking about putting the first consonant of the third word on the higher note (eg, the “n” of “near) helps to get rid of the scooping.
  • Worked in detail on alto rhythms in m. 31 and in m. 45 to 47. Please review these again on your own.
  • Established more excitement and “Hallelujah!” feeling on the soprano refrains

Lumi

  • Worked on the transition between the first section and the middle section.
  • Reinforced the articulation in the middle section (sleigh bumping over hard snow…)

[With the Band]

We Ran Through: (so fun!)

  • Give Us Hope
  • Bridge Over Troubled Water
  • Libertango
