Greetings, Prep 1 Families!

We had such a lovely first week of Prep 1 Classes here at Cantabile! I have reports of much singing, dancing, and learning, and it was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces, making music together! Please read the three updates below, one from Jazmine (Tuesday Prep 1), one from Emily (Wednesday Prep 1) and one from Katie (me – Thursday Prep 1!) Enjoy our recounts of class, and the different tools and suggestions we have in order for you to encourage music-making and song-practice at home!

From Jazmine:

  • We began class with the fun song Waddaly Atcha. Sing this with your child and encourage him/her to find new places to keep the steady beat, and new sounds to make at the end of the song! Especially encourage high sounds to engage the head voice!
  • We did several fun movement songs, which allowed the children to walk and dance to the steady beat, learn everyone’s name, and create new movements. Two of these were Sally Go ‘Round the Sun and Hop Old Squirrel. Have your child show you how to play these games!
  • We also started one of our beautiful recital songs, Each of Us is a Flower. Listen and sing with your child at home, while making motions to match the lyrics!
  • We ended by singing and looking at the beautiful picture book for My Favorite Things. Always a fun song to sing on a rainy day!

From Emily:

I had a wonderful time singing and playing with Isabella, Jaiying, Eva and their grownups on Wednesday! Our lesson featured a number of songs about Bumble Bees, including Hickety Tickety Bumble Bee and we even listened to Rimsky-Korsakov’s fun Flight of the Bumble Bee.  We learned about beat and rhythm: the beat tells us how fast or slow the song goes, while the rhythm goes along with the words.  The children were able to feel and show the beat in several songs, and they successfully found the beat in a song that I sang for them—without any help from me. I was very impressed!  I look forward to seeing you again next week!

  • We passed Nemo the Fish while singing the song “Hickety Tickety Fish in the Sea. Some of the kids sang their name for us! Encourage your child to sing his/her name as I do in this recording:

  • We also worked on our rhythm reading by playing and saying the rhythm of different Valentine’s Day words. See if your child can clap the rhythm of different items around your house: “ap-ple,” or “pi-a-no.” Discuss they number of syllables, and decide whether it is a tah, titi, or something else!

Have a great weekend, and see you in class next week!
