Jazmine Harnishfeger-Brand

Prep 3 – Monday, Jazmine

We started this week with a new game, “Who Stole The Cookie Jar” – a great way to focus our minds on rhythm, beat keeping, and remembering each other’s names!  Then we dove straight into warm ups, and had a blast singing “Gimme One” in Hindi, Hebrew, and Spanish.  I’m looking forward to learning how to count to three in other languages next week!

Next we started a new piece, “There Has To Be A Song”.  This will be the closing piece that all singers will sing together at the All Choir Concert in May, so it’s very important that we sing it well!  Then we reviewed “I Am” in two part harmony, and I was delighted with how well the singers have been able to accomplish this challenging task in just a few weeks!

We paused for a dance break and practiced “Irish Washer Woman” which is a wonderful dance to reinforce beat keeping and A-B form.  We’ve got another week to hopefully master the challenging “touch-touch-pass” part.

Then we ended rehearsal by learning more of “We Can Plant A Forrest”.  We now have almost the entire song learned!

Next week we’ll be continuing to work on harmony for the pieces we have, and hopefully will start another new one!  Thank you for all of your hard work, both at home, and in rehearsal, and I’ll see you next Monday!

Prep 3 – Tuesday, Amy

It was great to have two weeks of rehearsal in a row! This week we continued our work on fluency with solfege syllables by deriving the solfege for a folk song we learned last week, “Paw Paw Patch.” We will take this a step further next week by  notating on the staff together.

We started working on a Zulu piece called “Thula Klizeo“.  This piece has a really fun body percussion section that we enjoyed learning and practicing.  The singers did a great job learning the Zulu text and following along in their music.

We continued to work on “I Am” and “Fly Away Horse” this week. The singers are doing a great job singing in two parts.  I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing these pieces become more and more performance ready.  We’ll be memorizing “I Am” in the next few weeks, so please encourage your singer to review this at home.

Also, next week, singers will be turning in the music theory packets they received last week. They will also be receiving their actual books next week as well as a schedule of assignments and due dates.

We ended our class this week with the song and clapping game, “Four White Horses.” The singers had a blast playing this game!

Dear Ensemble, Great to see that most  of you made good progress toward solid preparation of the concert music. Having to record The Wind made it absolutely necessary for you to give attention to detail and to reflect on your work.   We still have lots of work to do on all of our songs, KEEP UP THE PRACTICE!   […]

Prep 3 – Monday, Jazmine It was wonderful to welcome you all back to Prep 3 this week!   We started off our rehearsal reviewing our name game, reinforcing the difference between the steady beat and rhythm, and practicing being able to “pass the beat” without dropping it! Then, after our minds (and hands!) were warmed up, we moved on […]

Rehearsal #7/February 15th, 2017

Dear Ensemble, We had another good week, but unfortunately, we are still spending too much time teaching notes and rhythms that can be learned at home.  We trust that you have the skills needed to have successful practice sessions at home, and we are holding you to the expectation that you are going to be able to take over that […]

Prep 1 Blog #2 Week of February 13, 2017

Prep 1 Tuesday – Jazmine We had a wonderful week of Valentine’s Day themed music making!  We started class with our favorite song from last week “Downright/Upright” and had fun exploring how different emotions would be expressed through song (sad is minor and slow, excited is major and fast, etc.)  Then we moved on to vocal explorations with our scarves […]
