August 29, 2016 – VTG/Bravi Rehearsal #2

Dear Bravi and VTG Singers,

Nice work this past Monday.  I really enjoyed the process of starting new TTBB music together.

Please be certain you also review the Vocalise SATB blog, as there will be notes from “Vindo” there which will be crucial for you to observe.

VTG Singers: Remember to practice your vocal exercises every single day.  It should take 5 – 10 minutes, but you must dedicate the time to growing your command of your lower range and your passaggio.  If you don’t remember these exercises, ask another singer in VTG!

Everyone: here’s your practice agenda this week for Bravi and VTG repertoire, as well as a few notes on Vindo from me at the bottom:

Guide Me, O… (Trad. Appalachian)

Unison singing is tricky, and we need to sound like one voice on this piece.  We’ll work toward that in rehearsal, but for now remember to sing legato (especially in the slow sections).  Tenors lighten up on the low notes (and don’t sing if they’re too low). Basses lighten up on the high notes and let the baritones/tenors carry the weight.

6th line down: breathe in the middle of the phrase, where it is marked “meno forte”
13th line down: breathe in the middle of the phrase, where it is marked “meno f”

Remember, regarding vowels: diphthongs have to be elongated and purified slightly to get away from our “chewy” American diction.

Sing We Now of Christmas (arr. York)

Make sure your part is clearly marked in your score!  This arrangement splits into multiple parts often and it isn’t always clearly marked by the editor.  Please mark your scores (with pencil!) in a way that makes it easy for you to follow.

m. 28 – Breath (one beat) before “Now”
m. 30 – Similar breath
p. 3, rehearsal D – Please look over your parts in your own time here.  We didn’t spend a lot of time on this section, but we will next week!
p. 4 – Pay close attention to the multiple lines of divisi on the last page.  We assigned pitches for each of you (especially in the middle of the ensemble (T2/B1 range).  Make sure you know what pitches you were asked to sing.

The end of this arrangement has a rather demanding range.  We will adjust it as necessary but for now please learn the notes you were assigned.  If we discover in rehearsal that those notes are too high or low, we will either re-voice it or re-write it.

Vindo (SATB)

Nice work on this last week!

Please spend a GOOD amount of time on mm. 77 – the end.  We weren’t able to solidify this transition in the time we had last week, but it should be easy enough to learn on your own, as it is rather repetitive.

m. 78, 82, etc. – Tenors: don’t sweat the high G!  Sing it as healthily as possible.  The altos are doubling you here, so there will additional voices.  That being said, if it feels good, go ahead and sing out!
m. 101 – Elena takes a fairly big breath before the final three measures.  Please be sure you are looking up so you can be with here as she takes a large ritardando as well.  It’s marked in the soprano part… mark it down in yours if you need a reminder.

Amavolovolo (SATB)

Review this!  We didn’t touch it, but you must remind yourself how your part sounds.

Grace (SATB)

Review this!  We didn’t touch it, but you must remind yourself how your part sounds.  Elena would like the beginning verse to be sung by only the sopranos and altos, so please do NOT sing until p.5 (“Twas grace that taught…”).  This is a change from what we did on rehearsal #1.

We’ll go over both of these pieces at the next Bravi rehearsal before combining with Vocalise.

Other announcements and reminders:

Carpooling
Please use this spreadsheet to both request and offer carpooling to and/or from weekly rehearsals, events (eg. Retreat) and concerts. The more of our families that use this resource, the more useful it will be to our community. If you can offer a carpool – please add yourself to the list. Thank you!

Parent orientation is Monday, September 12th at 7:30pm. Your parents must attend – we will cover a whole year of vital information! Vocalise/Bravi/VTG is a family commitment: for you to be success, your parents must be well informed and stay current to all our activities.
Retreat:all singers are required to attend the Cantabile retreat at YMCA Camp Campbell September 16th – September 18th. Please make sure you read your handout!
Reminder: please make sure your parents have ordered the correct uniform for you.
Bring your yoga mats! Every week we will start at exactly 5:30pm on the floor with our shoes and socks off, and our yoga mats half-rolled beneath us. (Several yoga mats were left at rehearsal last night!) New singers will be getting their Cantabile yoga mats at retreat.

Have a wonderful week and we’ll see you next Monday!
