Magdalene Peng8 years with Cantabile
High Schools: Palo Alto High School
As a shy, slightly clueless 4th grader, Intermediate rehearsals were just another weekly activity I was nudged into by my enthusiastic parents. Intimidated and amazed by the tall, older-looking singers in the black outfits, I realized that reciting “Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater” along with redundant body percussion was, in fact, not the extent of what I could accomplish with 30 other young singers. As time went on in Cantabile and I became a part of amazing experiences such as touring the Baltics, being a part of Carmen, and singing with the Kronos Quartet, I gradually found my voice in more ways than I could have imagined. I developed a passion for singing all different styles and genres, and, more importantly, for making music with countless other amazing people and sharing it with others. Music has been a part of my life since early childhood, and being a serious pianist from a young age, I had always struggled with the inherent loneliness that comes with many hours of practicing. I can ultimately thank Cantabile for bringing me out of that shell and teaching me that music-making doesn’t have to be lonely or solitary; in fact, music is meant to be shared. I can proudly say without a doubt that Cantabile perfectly embodies this sense of community and has thoroughly inspired me not only in my musicianship, but also as a person going about my day-to-day life. Thank you, Cantabile!
